Discovery Southeast 2017 Summer Teacher Expeditions:  Professional Development in an Awesome Classroom.

Join Discovery Southeast this summer for one of two outstanding trips, and earn Professional Development credit along the way.

Teacher Expeditions:

  • provide natual history knowlege applicable to any classroom,
  • share strategies for engaging activities and lesson planning,
  • give teachers an expanded sense of comfort outdoors,
  • are a trip you’ve earned, let’s be honest.

Juneau’s Wilderness Out-The-Road, June 19-21

This 3 day Teacher Expedition explores the amazing wilderness right here in Juneau, accessible for our classrooms. Join Lead Naturalists Richard Carstensen and Steve Merli to explore some of the most gorgeous and fascinating ecosystems in the Tongass – seriously, right here in our backyard! The cost for this trip is $375, and includes instruction plus food and two nights lodging at the Eagle Valley Center in Amalga Harbor. 2 credits are available from UAA, which charges $74 for registration. Due to low enrollment for the Out-The-Road course, we are charging only a $15 deposit, and will confirm the course once we have sufficient enrollment.

Bears and Wilderness in Pack Creek, June 4-9

Our classic teacher expedition, this course explores the wilderness of Admiralty Island with a particular emphasis on the brown bear habitat around Pack Creek. After an orientation day in Juneau, we’ll padle for two days to Pack Creek, in Admiralty’s Seymore Canal. Once there, we’ll study and enjoy the rich wilderness habitat, and hopefully have front seat viewing as bears comb the spring tides. On the 9th we’ll fly back to Juneau via float plane.

Thanks to grant funding, the cost for this trip is $800. 3 credits are available from UAA, which charges $114 for registration. Food, guiding, instruction, and kayaks are provided. Other gear is available for rent or loan. Participants should expect and be comfortable with tent camping and moderate to full days paddling or hiking.

This trip is only open to teachers in Southeast Alaska who have not taken this trip or more than one other Teacher Expedition in the past. If you don’t meet these criteria but are interested, please let us know.

Description

While not common, weather or other aspects of wilderness living can delay our progress or hamper our ability to travel. Please maintain some flexibility in your schedule the days following the teacher expedition in order to accommodate any delays we might encounter.

Participant Agreement, including Medical Information, Risk Acknowledgement, and Legal Waivers:
After registering you’ll receive a link to our online Participant Agreement, which needs to be completed more than 10 days before the expedition starts. We recommend you take a moment now to look over a copy, so you’re comfortable with it before registering. Registration is voluntary, so if you don’t agree with the terms there, please don’t register, and instead let us know at info@discoverysoutheast.org.

 Expectations:
  • Please be prepared to be active outdoors.  Participants in the Pack Creek trip should be comfortable with the idea of kayaking for several days, and spending nights camping.  Participants in the out-the-road course will not have those same physical demands, however, should be comfortable spending at least half-days walking, occasionally off-trail.
  • Bring clothes for the weather… usually rain gear, boots, warm layers, and a change of clothes. *If these are hard to come by, just let us know; we have clothing to loan or give.
  • We expect participants to behave in a manner that does not jeopardize the group’s safety or our ability to offer meaningful programs for all participants.

Cancellations:

  • If we have to cancel a trip due to insufficient numbers, we will do so at least 21 days prior to the trip beginning.  Were that to happen, we would give you priority registration on any other Teacher Expedition.
  • If you cancel more than 21 days in advance, there’s a $35 cancellation fee.
  • If you cancel 21 or fewer days in advance, refund is only possible if we can fill your spot, and if so there’s still the $35 cancellation fee.
  • If you don’t submit a completed Participant Agreement within 10 days of the program beginning, or you are not allowed to participate due to behavior reasons, that is considered a non-refundable cancellation.
