Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEALT) and Discovery Southeast invite you to our annual Wander the Wetlands walk, taking place this year on Saturday, July 26, from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, at the Industrial Boulevard Trailhead.
Naturalists Richard Carstensen and Steve Merli will lead a muddy, fun, and engaging walk through Taashuyee-Chookan.aani (riverflats/grassy land, part of the Mendenhall Game Refuge).
This interactive hike will take us mostly off-trail across public lands west of Wooch Eelʼóox̱ʼu héen (Mendenhall River). SEALT manages several conservation parcels along the western border of the Refuge, and—time permitting—we may visit a few of them. However, these nature walks are all about observation and curiosity. Our groups often stop to explore interesting discoveries, so we typically don’t travel far.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This program is not an established trail — expect uneven, wild, and unmaintained terrain, with possible stream crossings and thick brush.
The walk is designed for adults, including beginners. Youth are welcome if they’re comfortable hiking in wetlands for 3-4 hours.
Beginner hikers are encouraged to call ahead if they’d like to discuss what to expect. (You’ve got this!)
WHAT TO BRING:
Tall boots (such as Xtratufs)
Weather-appropriate layers
Water, lunch, and snacks
Binoculars and a walking stick (recommended)
The program is FREE for Juneau community members. Space is limited and registration is required.

We look forward to exploring with you!
