  1. Summer Camp Leader is a great opportunity for someone exploring the field of outdoor education, or for an experienced educator looking to expand.  This position is in the field leading groups of elementary to middle school aged children as they explore the natural history of Juneau. This is part of Discovery Southeast’s hands-on outdoor education summer camp, Outdoor Explorers. Educators will work week-long day camps for most of the summer. The educator will co-lead a group of up to 13 children, ages 6-12, each week, engaging them with Juneau’s natural areas through outdoor exploration, natural history, traditional ways of knowing, science based education, and outdoor games and activities. Leaders work directly with a co-educator and other program staff in the field, as well as partner with other local youth program providers for activities. Before and throughout the summer, leaders will receive training and experience in inquiry based, hands-on field leadership and Southeast Alaska natural history. The leader is also responsible for minimal coordination and administration of the summer program and reports to the Executive or Program Director. The position is full time, with 35-40 hours a week starting at a rate of $15-16 per hour DOE. Educators will work 7-9 weeks of camp, with 1 week of training prior to camp, and a mid summer training, additional weeks off may be negotiable.   2. Our Mendenhall Glacier Bookstore has opportunities ranging from just starting a first job to managerial positions in retail. We (Discovery Southeast) operate the bookstore and gift shop at the Mendenhall Glacier. We’re hiring just a few retail positions to run the store this summer.  We’re seeking reliable individuals who work collaboratively and creatively in what’s certain to be an-ever-changing environment.  We value a supportive, fun, and meaningful workplace, in a gorgeous location.  Those with experience have the opportunity to take on diverse responsibilities and projects.  And those who are just starting out will find an atmosphere that supports their growth.  You will work with a small crew to promote a safe and successful work environment.  Working at the Bookstore supports Discovery Southeast’s nature and science programs for local kids, while providing visitors with mostly-local gifts and souvenirs from Alaskan authors and artists.

    Two main glacier bookstore positions for this summer:

    Assistant Manager at the Mendenhall Glacier Bookstore 

    We are hiring 2 assistant managers with experience in retail and leadership, who can help train and supervise staff, manage inventory, and participate in merchandising. This position will most likely start in May and run through September. The hourly pay starts at $17, based on experience.

    We are looking for a candidate with the following competencies:

    • Decision making that is sound, well-informed, and objective; taking into account the impact and implications of decision on others
    • Personal time management and goal setting 
    • Desire and enthusiasm to work with a team
    • Prior customer service experience
    • Prior leadership experience
    • Inventory management and ordering
    • Experience with a POS (ideally Square)
    • Ability to value and support diversity, and to relate respectfully with all people. 

    Retail Clerk at the Mendenhall Glacier Bookstore 

    We are also hiring retail clerks at the Mendenhall Glacier for the 2020 visitor season and summer. A background in retail is recommended but not required. This position will also likely start in May and run through September. The hourly pay starts at $14.
