Outdoor Explorers 2025 Summer Camp

We’re so excited for your child to join us at camp this summer!

In preparation, please review important information under the “Description” section below, including what to expect and what to bring.

Most camps have sold out; however, we still have a few spots available for Mountain Goats (ages 11-14).

If you have any questions, email us at info@discoverysoutheast.org.

Our week-long Outdoor Explorers day camps are designed for kids aged 4-14. Guided by Discovery Southeast naturalists, campers spend every day outside exploring, playing, learning, and making discoveries.

REGISTRATION GUIDELINES
  • We kindly ask that you enroll each child in only one week of camp. Children should be the requisite age by the first day of camp. If you’re interested in additional camp sessions, or your preferred week is full, you can sign up for our waitlist.
  • After signing up, you should receive a confirmation email/receipt from info@discoverysoutheast.org (be sure to check your spam folder!). To complete your registration, please submit a Participant Agreement within 48 hours.
  • Our camp calendar, cancellation policy, and Frequently Asked Questions section can be found below under “Description.” For the full camp catalog with theme descriptions, check out our post here.
  • If you don’t see the age and date combinations you’re expecting below, change both fields to “Choose an option” or click “Clear” to refresh the settings.
TUITION

We proudly offer sliding-scale tuition for all camps, allowing you to pay what is right for your family. You can choose to pay less than the recommended tuition (as low as $0), or contribute more if you are able. Operating costs for camp are approximately $480 per child.

  • For full-day camps, recommended tuition is $305 per child.
  • For half-day camps, recommended tuition is $205 per child.

We ask those paying less than half of the recommended tuition per child to complete the Youth Scholarship Program application and apply some or all of the awarded funds to Discovery Southeast tuition.

Description

Each day, we will explore beautiful parks and natural areas around Juneau. Campers will enjoy hiking, playing group games, building with natural materials, and learning about local plants and animals.

We are committed to fostering a supportive environment where every participant can enjoy a meaningful camp experience. Kindness is a core value — extended to ourselves, to one another, and to the land. To ensure the wellbeing of the group, campers are expected to follow all instructions provided by adult leaders.

If your child would benefit from 1:1 support during the camp day, please provide details in your Participant Agreement. We aim to provide extra support whenever possible. Important information to describe in the Participant Agreement includes: common triggers, communication preferences, sensory considerations, group dynamics, and/or preferred methods to self-regulate. We will follow up via phone or email to discuss information provided in the Participant Agreement and confirm next steps.

Our programs often involve using the bathroom in the woods. A few locations have access to a toilet; however, your child should be prepared to use nature’s “facilities.” Staff will support your child, if needed, in learning this “outdoor skill” while maintaining privacy.

At Discovery Southeast, we run programs in all kinds of weather. Whether it’s rainy or sunny, we believe each day offers something wonderful to discover in nature — and the right gear makes all the difference. Weather conditions can fluctuate throughout the day, so layers are key!

This packing list covers the essentials for exploring our temperate rainforest home, based on years of experience.

Note: Children carry their own backpacks throughout the day, so please be mindful of this when packing.

  • Backpack: one that comfortably fits your child
  • Waterproof cover for backpack (or lining inside the backpack — a kitchen garbage bag works!)
  • Water bottle: at least 1 liter to keep hydrated
  • Lunch and snacks: pack more than you think — kids tend to get extra hungry outside!
  • Footwear: rain/hiking boots or tennis shoes (depending on the weather/activity)
  • Rain gear: rain jacket and pants, plus waterproof mittens/gloves (for colder/wetter days)
  • Warm layers: a sweatshirt or fleece (to wear over a t-shirt), comfortable socks
  • Sun protection: sunscreen and a hat (for sunny days)
  • Extra clothing: a full change of clothes and extra socks in a sealed plastic bag
  • Bug spray (optional)

Please do not bring: any electronics (including phones and smart watches), toys, or knives

If any of these items are hard to come by, please let us know. We have gear to lend and lunches to share!

If you cancel more than 10 days in advance of camp, we offer a refund minus a $25 cancellation fee.

If you cancel 10 or fewer days in advance, a refund is only possible if we can fill your spot, and if so there’s still the $25 cancellation fee.

If you don’t complete a Participant Agreement by May 2, 2025, or if your child is not allowed to participate due to behavior reasons, a refund is only possible if we can fill your spot, and if so, there’s still the $25 cancellation fee.

Email info@discoverysoutheast.org for cancellations.

Can we sign up for multiple weeks?

We ask that you enroll your child in one week of camp. If you’re interested in another week of camp, please sign up for our waitlist.

When does my child need to be the requisite age?

Camp is organized by age, not grade level. Children should be the requisite age by the time camp begins. For example, children enrolling in the June 23-27 Flying Squirrels camp should be 6 years old by June 23, the first day of camp.

My child’s age falls under more than one age group. Which age group should I sign up for?

You can self select which group you think will be a better fit for your child, and what works best for your family. An 8-year-old, for example, may participate in Flying Squirrels (6-8), Porcupines (7-9), or Marmots (8-11).

What paperwork and legal waivers are required?

After registering, please complete our Participant Agreement that includes Medical Information, Risk Acknowledgement, and Legal Waivers. A Participant Agreement for each child is due by May 2. If you register after May 2, please complete a Participant Agreement within 48 hours.

Registration is voluntary, so if you don’t agree with the terms there, please don’t register, and instead let us know at info@discoverysoutheast.org.

What does my child need to wear and pack for camp?

See “What to Bring” tab above for a detailed packing list.

What's expected of my child at camp?

See “What to Expect” tab above.

What's the bathroom situation?

Our programs often involve using the bathroom in the woods. A few locations have access to a toilet; however, your child should be prepared to use nature’s “facilities.” Staff will support your child, if needed, in learning this “outdoor skill” while maintaining privacy.

How does the waitlist work?

We keep a waitlist for every camp that fills up. We enroll children from the waitlist when other participants cancel.

If a camp is full or you’re interested in an additional week, you can join our waitlist. We’ll notify you via email if a spot becomes available for your child.

Can I cancel?

See “Cancellation Policy” tab above.

Outdoor Explorers summer camps are made possible thanks to the US Forest Service, the citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenue, and a community of support.
